The Lighthouse Care Center is the vision of the director and was developed to address critical educational needs within the surrounding community. Its collaborative vision is to design, equip, and sustain an instructional facility through which several community organizations can partner together to benefit under-served citizens, particularly youth and under-educated, unemployed women and their children.
The Lighthouse CARE Center is an educational agency housing academic, technical, cultural, and domestic programs for low-income, at-risk residents of Galveston County, Texas and is a collaborative, community outreach program formed by scholastic, non-profit faith and community-based organizations. Partnership members chose the word CARE to name the Center. An acronym for Christian Alliance Resource & Education, CARE expresses their mission of community service and willingness to partner with organizations that share common goals using the motto "Believers in Christ working in unity serving our community. The foundation is religious, but its focus is civic, humanitarian, educational, multi-cultural, and non-denominational. The Center was birthed in the hearts of people who saw the crippling effect from a lack of education, life skills and employment opportunities. The CARE Center is physically located at 1721 33rd Street, Galveston, Texas, but the programs and services offered extend to other citizens throughout Texas as far as El Paso. This historical building, built in 1916, was formerly an extension of Central United Methodist Church and stood unoccupied and unused for fifteen years. More than 150 volunteers were recruited from surrounding church congregations and youth groups which included Pentecostals, Quakers, Episcopals, Baptists, Four Square, Methodist and other non-profit charitable organiations to rehabilitate and repair the structure with $0.00 budget.
