A fresh start, a new beginning . . there is something optimistic and hopeful in these words. Can a person really begin again? There is a way. Jesus Christ called it being born again (John 3:7). The Bible teaches that everybody has done wrong . . "all have sinned" (Romans 3:23). Because of this we are separated from God (Isaiah 59:2). The great scientist Pascal observed that there is an emptiness in each of us that only God Himself can fill. Our wrongs have built a wall between God and ourselves because God is perfect and holy (without sin). This separation will untimately lead to our spiritual demise. There is, however, a solution. God's justice requires a penalty for our wrong actions, but in His love and mercy He gave us His Son to meet the requirements of justice and to provide salvation for all people. As stated in the Scriptures, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8,NIV). Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixtion for our wrongs to break down the wall of separation between us and God. Jesus then rose from the dead. His Spirit is now available to unite us to God. You can be forgiven by God for all the things you have ever done wrong. You can know that when you die you will go to heaven. How can this happen? JESUS SAID, "YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN." He spoke this phrase to a man named Nicodemus, a local religious leader who came to talk to Jesus one night. Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, You must be born again" (John 3:5-7, NIV). BEING RELIGIOUS AND SINCERE WAS NOT ENOUGH for Nicodemus to find God's kingdom. Jesus said that he still needed to be born again. The new birth He described to Nicodemus was not a physical birth, but a spiritual birth. HOW CAN SOMEONE BE BORN AGAIN? Jesus said to repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). What is "the gospel"? The Bible records that one day a large crowd of thousand people asked Jesus' followers what they must do to be saved from their wrongdoing. One of Jesus' followers, the apostle Peter, spoke to the crowd with the gospel message. Je said, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. The promise is for you" (Acts 2:38-39,NIV). Believe that Jesus died for you on the cross. In prayer to God, in your own words, admit your need, and determine to turn away from doing wrong. This is called repenting. Next follow the example and teaching of Jesus and the apostles and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. (See Mark 16:16; Acts 19:5.) Then invite Jesus to come into your life through His Holy Spirit. JESUS SAID, "HERE I AM! I STAND AT THE DOOR AND KNOCK" (Revelation 3:20, NIV). He has promised to give His Holy Spirit to all those who believe on Him and that supernatural signs would accompany this experience. (See Mark 16:17; acts 2:4; Acts 10:45-46.) IF YOU WILL LET CHRIST IN YOUR LIFE TODAY, YOU TOO CAN BE BORN AGAIN. We challenge you to investigate further. We are a group of students who seek to know Jesus Christ and the power of His Name through the experience of "rebirth" or salvation. Our main purpose is to reach out to our fellow students, teachers, and associates in all areas of life with God's love expressed through Jesus Christ. We hope to create lasting student and faculty organizations/ministries on the Tyler Junior College and University of Texas at Tyler campuses that will reach out to the lost, minister to the Christian student, and provide a link and guide to the local church. Our outreach includes the local community as well as international students whom God has brought from around the world and right to our doorstep to know Him. College is the place where open discussion and inquiry into major philosophies take place and it is also the time when personal decisions are made to follow a certain belief that will affect not only the student but everyone who ever knows them. This is the time to follow the great commission of Jesus . . . "GO YE THEREFORE, AND TEACH ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY GHOST; TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THINGS WHATSOEVER I HAVE COMMANDED YOU; AND, LO, I AM WITH YOU ALWAY, EVEN UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD" (Matthew 28:19-20).
