Meeting from around the world for worship and fellowship. Pingtung English Fellowship was established in March of 1993 by veteren SBC missionaries Jerry & Sandy Cole and Steve & Linda Moorhouse. Their vision was to provide Pingtung's foreign, English-speaking community a venue for worshiping in English while at the same time use the English service as an "outreach" tool to the English-speaking and "English-learning" Chinese community.Weekly Schedule:Worship Service 4:00-5:00 every Sunday afternoonContact information:Wayne Schams (08) 723-7573 (in English)
Pastor Joseph Chyou (08) 722-0075 (in Chinese or English)History:Pingtung English Fellowship formally began on March 14, 1993. It developed from the vision of American SBC missionaries Jerry & Sandy Cole and Steve & Linda Moorhouse, whose goal was to provide an English worship service for the foreign, English-speaking community in Pingtung while serving as an outreach tool. Although from the beginning we have met in a Southern Baptist church, our Fellowship is interdenominational in nature. Our membership has been quite diverse representing a wide variety of ages, nationalities and walks of life. Over the past seven years since our founding we have had at one time or another members representing the United States, Canada, Norway, Finland, England, Germany, the Philippines and Japan. Over a six-year period, we have had three American missionaries (through the SBC's "Journeyman" program) serve for two-year terms in our Fellowship as well as in other English ministries sponsored by the church. Rusty Bennett served here from 1993-1995. Shortly after he returned to the States, Sunneye Phillips came and served until the summer of 1997. Then in the fall of 1997, Christopher Wright came and served until June of 1999. The Journeyman program has since been discontinued by the SBC board. Over the past seven years, the missionaries who have served here have gone on to serve in other ministires in Taiwan or abroad. For the past several years the Moorhouses have been pastoring a church in Gunnison, Colorado. In November of 1999, the Coles returned to the U.S. on furlough. Although they anticipate returning to Taiwan, it likely won't be to Pingtung. Their departure has brought new challenges to PTEF as the leadership has been transferred from seasoned full-time missionaries to laypersons. Since November of 1999, Wayne Schams, a full-time English teacher, has taken over the main leadership responsibilities. We are blessed to have Rosa Tu assist in leading the music and Caroline, a music instructor at Pingtung Teacher's College, accompany on the piano.Ministries:There are no paid positions at PTEF. All of our Fellowship's leaders serve voluntarily. Therefore, most of the money PTEF receives through weekly offerings is used to support a variety of missions projects and ministries both in Taiwan and throughout the world. Following is a sample of projects PTEF has financially supported in more recent years:* Supporting several students at Pingtung's Victory Home (home for handicapped children)
* Gift for Christian drug rehabilitation center in Pingtung County
* Aid to help rebuild Puli Christian Hospital (central Taiwan) following Taiwan's 1999 "921" earthquake
* Gift to help new church in the Philippines purchase chairs and musical instruments (pastor's wife was former PTEF member)
* Gift to help provide Bibles & relief aid for Christians in southern Sudan
* Funds for help in building an orphanage for children of AIDS victims in ZimbabweOur Fellowship also sponsors and encourages participation in other special events throughout the year. For example, we have previously had teachers from the well-known "Studio Classroom" and "Let's Talk in English" English-learning magazines/radio programs (affiliated with the ministry of Overseas Radio & Television-ORTV) speak in our service. For the past two years we have participated in the annual worldwide "International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church" held in mid-November. We also have occasional "fellowship dinners" following our Sunday services. /html>
