St, Andrews AME Church is named after its founder, the Rev. Andreas Van der Westhuizen, a Superannuated Preacher. He retired in 1989 due to ill-health after 35 years of active ministry serving 4 churches as an itinerant elder. Windhoek, the Namibian capital, like any other town in southern Africa, was divided by the apartheid South African government in ethnic townships. The so-called Coloureds were restricted to live in Khomasdal, and the public transport system between Katutura and Khomasdal was non-existent, and private taxis were very expensive. Also, the natural river that divides the two townships made travelling by foot very difficult, especially at night. Also, the numbers at Ebenezer AME Church were increasing. As a result, the St. Andrews AME Church was officially organised and today caters for mixed populations in independent Namibia that have come to settle here. The Church was also served by Rev. E.S. Tjirimuje, Rev. W.A. Balie, Rev. Ismael P. /Goagoseb, Rev. Jakobus Rooinasie and now Rev. Daniel Schmidt. Our pastor is a educationist by profession and is currently the Deputy Principal at Moses van der Byl Primary School. He has previously pastored at Richard Allen AME Church (Swakopmund) and Hoachanas East AME Church. Our buildings are modern and was built and dedicated at the cost of about $500 000-00. Bishop McKinley Young dedicated the Dorothy Young Multi-purpose Hall (including of kitchen, store rooms, etc.) in April 1996, and Bishop Harold B. Senatle dedicated the main building (including the church sanctuary) in September 1997. Our membership is growing very fast and we are working very hard towards settling the mortgage very soon. If you are new in our area, and do not have a church home, we invite you to consider joining the St. Andrews family. We promise to take you in and get the best out of you, not for yourself, but to make Khomasdal a better place. God bless.
The Mission of the AME Church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed. WE want to seek and save the lost, and served the needy through a continuing program. We want to embrace you, our neighbour and with your help, be of assistance to those who are less fortunate. We are about testimony, not titles; we are about tithing to make the world a different and better place. We invite you, "come home, come home!".
