According to the 1991 census 1,386,000 Australians claim to be Uniting Church. The Uniting Church is the largest non-government community network in Aged Care, Youth in Crisis, support for our indigenous people, Overseas Aid and many other areas of welfare. The Uniting Church was formed in 1977 from three churches which had been represented in Australia for nearly two centuries: The Congregational Union of Australia, the Methodist Church of Australasia, and the Presbyterian Church of Australia. These churches agreed to come together to form a church which was committed to work in a fresh way on what it means to be a faithful Christian church in this part of the world in the changing circumstances of the twentieth century. The document upon which this union was established is the Basis of Union of the Uniting Church in Australia.
