Welcome to our web site!

Welcome, also, if you choose to visit us for worship or to attend one of the programs we offer. The Lutheran Church in Norwood is a small, friendly congregation affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Located near the corner of Montgomery Road and Ivanhoe Avenue, across from Norwood Plaza, the church building is handicapped accessible and is on the Cincinnati Metro bus line (Routes 4 and 51 at the corner).

The Norwood English Lutheran Church will be celebrating its many years of ministry to the community during the month of July. On Sunday, July 16, Pastor Kathy Thompson, a former member, will officiate at the Communion service.

Sunday, July 23, Bishop Cal Holloway will join the fellowship to worship with us and recognize the saints who have worshipped at Norwood English Lutheran Church over the years.

The final service at the church will take place on Sunday, July 30. Pastor John Hofer will preach. Pastor Hofer "grew up" at Norwood English Lutheran Church. His father was pastor at the church for many years. Charlotte Hofer Knost will serve as organist, with special music. Pastor Ray Menchhofer and Pastor Grace Werzinski, current and past pastors of the church, will present short homilies. Pastor Wally Arnold, representing Bishop Holloway, will participate with church members in the Order for Closing a church. This service will be the last to be held in the this beautiful and historic church building.

In the service, we come together to honor and praise our God, Creator and Author of all life; our Redeemer, who walked among us; and the Holy Spirit within each of us. We give thanks for the saints, living and dead, who have gone before us from this church. We give thanks for the faith that has been nourished here by Word and Sacrament. We give thanks for caring interest, gentle touch, kind words and deeds, faithful examples of lives well lived, empathy, charity, fellowship, and many unexpected blessings that this people, the Church, have bestowed. We each remain a part of the church universal, enriched by our lives at Norwood Lutheran, to go forth and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Our History

Norwood English (to distinguish it from the German-speaking churches) Lutheran Church was organized in June of 1909 as a mission congregation in the "suburb" of Norwood. Cincinnati has since grown up and around the town which maintains its independent "city" status. Services were first held in the First National Bank Building, but in January of 1910 the present building was purchased. Norman Vincent Peale worshipped here as a child, as his father was the pastor of the Grace Methodist Church, which formerly occupied the building. In 1926 the present sanctuary and stained glass alter window were added. The Moeller pipe organ, still in use, was installed in 1927.
The Lutheran Church in Norwood boasts a rich history of community service. Present activities include:

About the Lutheran Faith

The Lutheran Church arose in the early 1500's as a result of the Reformation, and is based on the principles of Martin Luther. Luther held that the Scriptures contained all that was necessary for salvation, which came by faith alone. His two catechisms contain the principal statements of faith; baptism, which is necessary for spiritual regeneration, and the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. The first Lutheran congregation in America was formed in 1638. In the 1700's, German Lutheran churches were established throughout the mid-Atlantic colonies. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, established in 1982, united various branches of the Lutheran church in this country. The ELCA, along with the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod and Wisconsin Evangelical Synod, comprise most of the nearly 8.4 million American Lutherans. World membership in the Lutheran church is more than 70 million, making it the largest Protestant denomination.

Our Worship Service

We are a liturgical church. The liturgy is an ancient form of order for worship that, although adapted over the centuries, has kept the same basic structure since the second century A.D. This form tells the story of God, who is gracious despite our rebellion; who has demonstrated His merciful love in every age; and whose Word is Jesus the Christ. The story is told through the rotation of Liturgical seasons: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Each season focuses on particular themes of Christian life.

The Mission of This Congregation

By God's grace, we are a family of God in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, called and sent to bear witness to His Word and to be good and thoughtful stewards of His gifts. We worship God, we serve in response to God's love, and we seek to promote growth by calling people to faith in Christ.
