About St. John's

St. John's is a Christ-centered community of people of diverse backgrounds and all ages. We come together to worship God through services each week and on special feast days. We learn ever more about our faith and Christian heritage through classes, Sunday School, Christian Ed and Bible Study. We meet to share in fellowship. We volunteer our time and talents in the service our Lord and of others.

Our lovely, historic church, more than 200 years old, is located in northeastern Yonkers in the Colonial Heights area, and though only a few blocks from the bustle of Central Avenue, St. John's can be described as a "country" church, full of warm, friendly, outgoing folks. Our schedule of services features weekly celebrations of the Eucharist at 8 and 10 AM and observance of major feast days as announced. During the summer months, we have one service at 9 AM.

Christian education is a priority at St. John's. Children 4-12 attend Sunday School, joining the congregation midway through the service to celebrate the Eucharist. In addition to seasonal Bible Study, we offer Christian educational opportunities for adults, through a variety of programs, throughout the year. We offer rigorous preparation to our older children for Confirmation in the Episcopal Church.

Music plays an important part in our worship. The weekly 10AM service includes offerings from our adult choir, and monthly offerings by our three childrens' choirs.

So that we may serve others as Christ commands us, we are involved in various outreach programs including support of a local food pantry. At Christmastime, we collect new toys for area children living in dire circumstances and also prepare and distribute gift baskets to hospice patients, most of whom will be celebrating their final holiday season. We have established an ongoing relationship with Carpenter's Kids where we sponsor 25 children in Tanzania orphaned by AIDS and have purchased a cow for the village in our sister parish in Chibelala. Our next project is raising funds for a well. Our Sunday School has spearheaded special fund-raising projects for disaster victims.

We come together often in fellowship as we celebrate Church feasts and other times with pot-luck suppers where you can find some of the the best home cooking around. Our fund-raisers, too, offer fun and fellowship. Our annual fair, in December this year, features vendors, food, raffles, white elephant and more. We always have a good time and raise a few dollars to boot. We like to mix "business with pleasure" so we always try to make our fundraising events lots of fun. Theme nights have included St. Patrick's Day, Caribbean Night, Italian Night, Mexican and International feasts. Our Auctions always prove to be lively and spirited, bidding for donated treasures.

Whether you are looking for a new church home or are visiting our area, we welcome you to St. John's. Please call the office if you have specific questions or need directions. Click here if you would like to learn more about the Episcopal Church.
