Its member units are located on the five continents and worship in many languages. It is the offspring of that type of Christianity which developed in the USA as a result of the desire: - to eliminate over-churching in some communities and solve attendant economic and staffing problems, - to replace the restrictiveness and divisiveness of some denominationalism with self-determination and Christian unity, and - to refocus primary loyalty from an organization outside a community to the community itself. The ICCC resulted from a 1950 merger of two previous councils, one comprised of churches predominantly black, and the other of churches with predominantly white membership. The Council is directly related to each community in which its congregations are located and encourages each local and national church constituency to take an active part in all ecumenical affairs within its community. Its stance is that of representing ecumenical Christian religion in the community. In concert with other mainline religious bodies, it seeks to bring the light of the Christian faith to bear upon all problems of society, political, social, cultural, etc. Its concept of "the people of God being one in the place where they are" is of great influence in drawing people of different backgrounds together in action to build the community. BONDS OF UNITY As a communion, ICCC has four ties for maintaining its unity: (1) its CONSTITUTION, which proves that though minds may differ in interpretation, hearts can beat as one in love, (2) its international CHURCH RELATIONS COMMITTEE on which the General Superintendents or Bishops of National Sections serve, (3) its ANNUAL CONFERENCE of clergy and laity which is convened at various places, (4) the ECUMENICAL CONSENSUS which has been reached by the member communions of the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) in 1988, at its 17th Plenary Session held in New Orleans, Louisiana. A document called CHURCHES IN COVENANT COMMUNION: THE CHURCH OF CHRIST UNITING has been issued in 1989 and is in the process of being approved by individual COCU member church assemblies or synods. The ICCC Conference gave its formal approval to the document in July 1990. THE CANADIAN SECTION OF ICCC AND THE CHRISTIAN CATHOLIC RITE OF COMMUNITY CHURCHES The first missionaries to minister in Canada were priests and brothers of the Society of the Precious Blood (SPB). The Society was founded in Belgian and French-Canadian settlements of Wisconsin July 1, 1888, by the Rev. J. René Vilatte. He was associated with Quebec reformer priest Charles Chiniquy, who organized and presided the first Christian Catholic (Community) Church Society, among French-Canadians of Illinois, April 11, 1858. SPB missionaries came to Quebec at the end of the 19th century and settled in Maskinongé County and Metropolitan Montreal. The Rev. J.B. Gauthier and Étienne Côté were in charge of the Quebec Mission Church. The Swiss Christian Catholic Prayer Book in French was used for worship. The usage has been maintained by the French-Canadian Community Church Movement, after it had been re-organized by the Rt Rev. O'Neill Côté as the Christian Catholic Rite of Community Churches (CCRCC). The CCRCC constituency forms the core of the Canadian Section of ICCC, of which Bishop S.A. Theriault is General Superintendent.
