Ashpole Center United Methodist Church was founded in 1860 and is the oldest Methodist church in Lumbee country. Ashpole, in earlier times, was also known as: Bethel, Dogwood, and Pleasant Hill. Ashpole is located at RT. 1 Rowland, N.C. Ashpole, like many churches in Lumbee country, came from humble beginnings. There was no electricity, the light was provided by kerosene lamps and the membership in the church was less than one hundred. The women of Ashpole participated in the Eastern Star, the Men participated in The Red Man's Lodge and everyone was a part of the Sunday School program.

The Pastors at Ashpole have included: Aaron Moore (1895), F.R. Lowry (1895) and (1918), H.H. Lowry (1898), John B. Bridgers (1902), W.L. Moore (1906), W.R. Woodell (1908), D.F. Lowry (1914), P.M. Locklear (1948), J. W. Smith (1928-1939, 1944), J.A. Wilkins (1947), Dewey Locklear (1948), J. D. Scott (1942), Harvey Lowry (1952), S. Dufrene Cummings (1977), Bill James Locklear (1985) Randall Cirksena, Jr. (1990) and George Locklear (1992). Harold Hunt (2006) has been appointed the present pastor.

The current activities of Ashpole include an adult choir, a youth choir, a children's choir, an administrative council, Bible study, Harvest day, Vacation Bible School, Christmas Play, Senior Citizen's Banquet, Family Fun day, Youth Day, Watch Night Service, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Children's Church. The current membership of Ashpole is approximately 110 and the average attendance is about 70 each Sunday.
