Lent Devotional

We would like to do something a little different for celebrating Lent.
Many Christians have a favorite Bible verse that has been helpful to them during a difficult time in their lives or for praise of God's blessings. We would like you to have the opportunity to share your favorite scripture with a brief explanation why it is important to you and an appropriate prayer. Including a hymn that reminds you of the scripture is optional. (As a guide, you may want to refer to a daily devotional, some are usually available in the church foyer.)
Providing we get a good level of participation and with your permission, we would like to compile these in a booklet to be distributed for use as a VHCC Lenten Devotional.
Please submit your entree to Teresa in the church office or Molly Anderson. You may e-mail Molly at
Outline: Bible Verse, Meditation, Prayer, Hymn.

Quiet Sermon

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him.
It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his pastors visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.
The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead.
Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The Pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.
As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I shall be back in church next Sunday."
We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left unspoken.

If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything!

MEDITATION

Verse: I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14
Thoughts:
The way to walk a tightrope is to keep one's sight on the goal, not on the ground or what is behind.
The way to walk with Jesus is to keep our eyes on the goal, His victory waiting for us when He returns, not on the ground (our failures) and not what is behind (our accomplishments).
The goal of the Christian walk is to keep walking toward Jesus until we walk with Him in heaven.
Prayer:
Lord, I look forward to the day when You call me by name and walk hand in hand with me. Until that day, help me fix my eyes on what You want me to be and not what I've done.
By Your grace I ask it. Amen.

SERENITY PRAYER

GOD, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

"Surrender to Him in 2010"

THE GOLDREN RULE

In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the prophets. (Matt. 7:12)

We can change the world with The Golden Rule today, by treating others with grace and not with justice or judgment.

MEMBERSHIP COVENANT

THEREFORE, IN COMMITTING MYSELF TO GOD, I COMMIT TO GROW AS A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST, ALONG WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF VERMILION HEIGHTS CHRISTIAN CHURCH, IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS.

1. I will protect the unity of my church by acting in love toward other members, by refusing to gossip, by following the leaders.

2. I will share the responsibility of my church by praying for it's growth, by inviting the unchurched to attend, by warmly welcoming those who visit.

3. I will serve my church by discovering my gifts and talents, by being regularly involved in service, by developing a servant's heart.

4. I will help my church glorify God by worshipping together faithfully, by living a godly life, by giving regularly.

5. I will become a mature believer in my church by participating in a small group, by developing spiritual habits, by surrendering to life by the Spirit.

PECANS IN THE CEMETERY

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucket full of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. While dividing the nuts, the boy said, "You take dis one, I take dat one, you take dis one, I take dat one." While they were dividing them, a couple pecans dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "You take dis one, I take dat one, you take dis one, I take dat one." He was amazed, and just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. "Come here quick," said the boy, "you won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls." The man said, "Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk." The boy was insistent though, so the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, "You take dis one, I take dat one, you take dis one, I take dat one." The old man whispered, "Boy, you've been tellin' me the truth. Let's get closer to see if we can see the Lord." Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. They still couldn't see Him, but they could hear once again, "You take dis one, I take dat one, you take dis one, I take dat one." In shock, they listened a little longer when they heard, "You take dis one, I take dat one, you take dis one, I take dat one, and the two back there by the fence we'll get when we get done." They say the old man made it back to town a full 5 minutes ahead of the kid on the bike, and both were shakin' in their boots.
