The work at the Centre is very demanding and varied. We deal with all sorts of people from all walks of life.
People come to us with all sorts of problems, hoping that we can solve them. Unfortunatly, this is not always possible but we do strive to help as many people as we can. We do not have nearly enough staff to cope with the demands placed upon us, so at times the work becomes very sressful. We deal with many homeless poeple daily.
We provide them with food, washing facilities, laundry service and most importantly a listening ear. A lot of our clients are simply lonely and drop in for a chat and to see a friendly face. We deal with alcoholics, drug addicts, battered wives, one parent families etc.
Some of them have come to regard us as their only friends and we have gained their trust by not treating them as social outcasts. During 1998 we had 276 new clients, some of our old and new clients have managed with our help to sort themselves out.
Sometimes it is necessary to cook meals on sight, clothing is also provided as sometimes people arrive in skegness with just the clothes on their back. Bedding is provided for those sleeping on the streets, we have a washing machine which often runs non stop. Once a week we cook a meal with food provided by local business people. It depends on the time of year as to how many people we feed. But very often the meal we provide is the only proper meal our clients eat during the week. We have a shower room which is mainly used by the homeless.
Apart from all of the above services we have a luncheon club, providing low cost meals to about 40 people, parent and toddler groups run on two mornings a week, we have 25 on the register. In the winter months adult education use our centre for various classes.
We have a small staff comprising of the Centre Manager-Linda Dawson, Cleaner & Cook-Marian Morgan, and six regular volunteers. our main source of income is from the selling of meals which is done six days a week during the summer months.
Being a seaside town the population of Skegness varies drastically, approximately 20,000 people live in the town. In the middle of the summer the towns population can rise to a quarter of a million (250,000). The team at the centre try to help everyone who comes through the doors. The work can become both stressful and difficult, but with Gods help and guidance and a firm commitment both to him and to each other we can achieve great things in his name.
We have just had a very busy summer season at the Corps & community Centre. We have had visiting bands,Sales, Coffee mornings, Lunches, etc. We are only a small seaside Corps so whatever we do is demanding on the Corps folk. Most of them are elderly and so cannot do what they once could. We have a small Band, and they work hard throughout the year both at the Corps and at other Churches in and around Skegness.
