Allow us to introduce ourselves...
We are your neighbors; we'd like to be your friends too!
Who are we? We are the Valley Orthodox Christian Reformed Church.
We are made up of people of all ages, from all walks of life. We are farmers, housewives, truck drivers, retirees, students...just regular people like yourself.
Our backgrounds differ; some of us are immigrants, others have been in this country for generations. Our experiences are all unique.
Though we have many differences, one principal tie unites us. We share a common faith. We are Christian. To be Christian means to be captured, heart and soul, by the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have forgiveness of sin and new life. This is the most important feature about our congregation.
Another word in our name is Orthodox.
That word is made up of two Greek words which mean "right praise". That means we hold dearly to the Bible - the Word of God; nothing more and nothing less. Our goal and our calling as a congregation is to rightly praise God in our worship and in our lives.
We rightly praise God by believing without question what He reveals to us in the Bible. We hold to the inerrancy of the Bible. This means the Bible is without error and is a faithful and true guide for our faith and life (II Timothy 3:16-17). We maintain and act upon this belief even when the Bible's teaching is unpopular or not "politically correct." A few of these teachings are:
-God's creation of the universe in six days.
-God's calling of men only to serve as officers in His Church.
These are the Bible's clear teachings and therefore we hold to them and defend them. (The Bible teaches us many more things as well. God's Word speaks with authority to every situation!)
We are Reformed. To be reformed is to know that God does not change to suit man's purposes, but He graciously changes us to suit His.
Jesus taught us that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. How do we do this?
Our primary task as a church, we believe, is to worship God in the way He wants us to worship Him. This we strive to do Biblically in humility and joy each Sunday at 9:30 am and 7:30 pm. We sing together to God. We pray to Him, casting our cares upon Him, knowing He cares for us. We listen to what He has to say to us in His Word. We hear sermons which explain God's will for our lives. The sermons are understandable, challenging, and practical, and above all Biblical. True inspiration in a world fraught with pop-psychology and faith in faith itself.
We love and rightly praise God, as we worship and also throughout the week. Wherever we are, whatever we are doing we know that God's Word speaks to that situation and we demonstrate our love to God by acting in accord with His Word.
Jesus also told us that the second greatest commandment was like the first, namely: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:37-40). We care for one another and support one another in times of difficulty; we praise God together when we experience His blessing in particular ways. We pray for one another on a regular basis.
We also reach out to those in need in other nations. We support mission endeavors both at home and abroad.
To insure that all of the work of the congregation is conducted decently and in good order, the Valley Orthodox Christian Reformed Church has two types of church officers.
Deacons see to it that the needy are provided for, so that no one is without food, clothing, or shelter. They also help people in a multitude of practical ways such as seeing to it that new moms have meals brought in to their families while they regain their strength.
Elders make certain that the teaching is sound, that baptism and communion are properly administered, and that families and individuals are assisted in every way possible in their faith and life.
Together, the Deacons and the Elders make up the Consistory and provides direction and supervision for the congregation.
Just before the risen Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, He told His disciples that repentance and forgiveness of sins was to be preached in His name to all nations "beginning at Jerusalem" (Luke 24:47). It's been 2,000 years and the Good News about Jesus has traveled considerably beyond the precincts of the city in which it was first announced. It has even come to the Nooksack Valley, where it continues to work its wonderful power to transform lives, to unite diverse peoples, to fortify families, and to revitalize communities.
