Foundations:

Ordo Franciscus Sanctus (The Order of Saint Francis) is a non-profit, tax-exempt religious incorporation established under the laws of the State of Florida. The order maintains a global presence. Ordo Franciscus Sanctus follows a modified version of the rule of Saint Francis of Assisi written in 1221 A.D. Franciscans first and formost exist to serve God, and His intentions for the human race. In keeping with this thought, Franciscan groups worldwide work for social justice and global peace. However, each group of Franciscans also has their own special reason for existance. After the work of the twelve that followed our Lord while he was on this earth in physical form, this type of special undertaking is called an: "Apostolate."

Apostolate:

Ordo Franciscus Sanctus assists young male criminal offenders from eighteen to twenty five who have become involved in crime directly due to their having Attention Deficit Disorder. It is suspected that seventeen precent of the population of the United States has active A.D.D. or A.D.H. D. Most are males. The cause of ADD is genetic, and while both males and females are equal carriers of the genetic code, active ADD is found far more often in males than in females. There are thirteen different subtypes of ADD currently identified. Several of these can cause a young person to act out behaviours that will generate great problems for them, and those they come in contact with in our society. It is extimated that seventy precent of incarserated inmates are a direct result of undiagnosed and untreated ADD. Due to the fact that many teenagers and young adults with active ADD also have one or more parents with active ADD, current attempts at intervention by the schools is simply not enough. This is compounded by the fact that ADD causes a person to attempt to avoid being diagnosed. ADD denial runs as strong as the denial found in alcoholics. In addition, up to date knowledge on ADD has been very slow to filter its way from the special research projects down to the general public. Many medical professionals are still in the dark as to the latest findings, and are operation on outdated information. While there are medications that help ADD people, proper education is by far the most important area to focus on. ADD is a lifetime struggle. A person does not grow out of it! It does not go away when a person finishes school, or at some magic age where adulthood is "said" to have arrived. Due to these and other miscomceptions, ADD is largely misdiagnosed as "Bipolar Affective Disorder" after the age of eighteen. This causes a person to be placed on the exact opposite of the medications that they really need, if indeed medication is needed at all. The results are a tragedy. Ordo Franciscus Sanctus exists to help young men pick up the peices of the shambles their lives have become. In addition, the order dissiminates information to the public in an attempt to help others intervein in young ADD lives before they crash and burn. We are in the process of writing a grant to fund a "half-way house" to house young ADD men who have no where to go due to their behaviour. The house will except parole and probationers as well as serving as a crisis intervention center. Another grant will be sought to fund public educational intervention through lectures, seminars, and the media. Want to know more, or how you can help? Email us, or write to the address above. You are also welcome to telephone us if you like. We are in the proces of writing yet another grant to fund a national toll free number. Thank you for taking time out to visit with us. Fr. Joel Dunaway, O.F.S. Minister General
