Brother Charles de Foucauld, whose dreams and endeavors led to the establishment of the Little Brothers of Jesus within the Roman Catholic Church, and who was the inspiration for our own Evangelical order of the Little Brothers, envisioned a "monastery without walls." That certainly is a good description of our situation.
Several years ago, a number of Christians, coming from a variety of liturgical traditions, established a skete in beautiful Alpine, California (about 30 miles east of San Diego) and called it Holy Incarnation Monastery. Our intention was to follow the principles of Brother Charles--within the framework of an Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical approach, for we have defined and understand ourselves as:
. . . Orthodox in our Faith--holding steadfastly to the teaching of the Undivided Church,
. . . Catholic in our Worship--following Western Rite liturgical traditions and
. . . Evangelical in our Mission--sharing the Good News of our redemption in Jesus Christ.
Our Statement of Faith is probably one of the most solid that you will ever encounter. Click to send mail requesting your copy.
Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances, the few of us who were in residence at the Alpine monastery had to disband after a couple of years. And so, at present, we are simply a loosely organized group of Christians who live in scattered areas and are involved in a number of different ministries. As a "solitary" of sorts here at Holy Incarnation House, I would describe myself as a "Fool for Christ," were it not that I regarded such a title to be so lofty and venerable, that it ought be "ascribed to" rather than "claimed by" an individual.
Each of our brothers supports himself in whatever way possible--usually through employment in one of the helping profession, such as teaching, counseling, health, etc. In addition, we are often involved in the activities of a variety of local parishes. For example, I was originally ordained a Lutheran minister, travelled a bit in and among some of the Orthodox/Catholic circles (including a number of "independent" groups) and, most recently, served as "priest-on-loan" for the traditional Anglican parish of this local area.
The Evangelical Little Brothers of Jesus promote and encourage:
. . . traditional theology amidst compassionate conduct toward one another,
. . . traditional Western Rite worship using contemporary language,
. . . Sacramental theology and Eucharistic celebration,
. . . individual and community Prayer and
. . . the preservation and spreading of traditional Liturgical Art and Music.
I have written a number of original hymn texts, which are copyrighted, but are available for use by anyone as long as proper credit is given. Much of the
inspiration for these hymns came from melodies of the Lutheran chorale and English hymnody
traditions, but if there are any competent persons out there who wish to compose music conducive to the spirit of the texts, such would certainly be appreciated. Send an e-mail to request a sample copy.
PRAYER of ABANDONMENT
(Brother Charles of Jesus)
Father, I abandon myself into Your hands; do with me as You will;
---for whatever You may do, I give You thanks.
I am ready for all, and I accept all that You may send my way.
Let Your will alone be done in me and in all Your creatures--
I wish for no more than this, my Lord.
Into Your hands I commend my soul and all my being;
I offer myself to You with all the love of my heart.
For I love You, Lord, and I so much need to give myself to You
---to surrender myself into Your hands, without any reservation
---and with total confidence, for You are my Father.
Thanks for visiting!
---Fr. Michael, Holy Incarnation House
