Owning properties located at 2113, 2115, 2117 and 2119 Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore City ... Christ Temple Church, Incorporated was organized and founded in 1964 by Rev. Levester Waddy and has been an icon in the Black community for 42 years.
As a minister and recognized as a Man of God throughout Baltimore, Washington DC and Virginia, Rev. Waddy came to Baltimore to pursue his vision and fulfill his dream of building a church. Being a carpenter by trade, and possessing a talent of rebuilding positive things from negative things, Rev. Waddy began with an old building in Baltimore City.
The building that is now the sanctuary of Christ Temple Church was purchased by Rev. Levester Waddy in 1964 from Sol Klein and had formerly housed two business enterprises that were not religious. In what is now the main sanctuary, the building was used and known as the 'Longest Bar in the City'. After that, it became the 'Lennox Theatre' which specialized in the showing of second rate cowboy and Indian movies. The building is well-known part of the Pennsylvania Avenue history.
Through Rev. Waddy's vision and commitment, Christ Temple Church became a fixture in the Black community of Baltimore. His philosophy focused on teaching men, women and children the importance of self-respect, honoring parents, elders and others.
Long before Jesse Jackson shouted "I Am Somebody", Rev. Waddy used the phrase to encourage his followers. Most of all, he taught about GOD, who made all of us, and to whom we should look to for grace, mercy and courage!
It was through the continued efforts and determination of Rev. Waddy, that when others told him the church would not survive on Pennsylvania Avenue, still the church had a Mortgage Burning Ceremony in 1987. Through faith, prayer and the contributions of members, the church became a foundation that enabled many young people to further and complete their educational goals. Adult members were encouraged to return to school and became teachers, nurses, dieticians, bank managers, computer specialists, office administrators. Many of the members started their own business through the encouragement of Rev. Waddy.
In January 2006, the Rev. Levester Waddy left his earthly home to dwell in the Kingdom of God that he preached about to others. His hopes, wishes and dreams for the continuation of Christ Temple Church is being pursued by the "Faithful Few", members who are determined to rebuild the church building and ministry into an integral part of the Pennsylvania Avenue future.
