The cornerstone was laid on April 3, 1844 by the Bishop of Maryland on land donated by the neighboring Gale Family. The cemetery was originally that families private burying ground. The Chapel was consecrated in August of 1845 adn The Reverend Richard Whittingham, Jr. became its Deacon and Assistant to the Rector at St. Mary Anne's. The Parish House was named for Howard Tipton, a dedicated lay worker in the Parish. Historic St. Mark's Church serves a rapidly growing western Cecil County.
