Different people come and join churches for different reasons. Some come looking for a church family after they are touched by God in some way. Others come for various reasons. The majority of researchers agree that most people, in fact 75% to 90%, come because a friend or relative extends an invitation to them. In a 1991 article in Leadership magazine, people from around the country were asked to list the factors that encouraged them to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It will be no surprise that family environment and family members topped the list with over 70% of the respondents citing these factors. The next group of factors most influential in decisions for faith was individual witness and outreach efforts of churches. These results confirm the importance of the personal invitation of family and friends in leading unchurched prople to the church and to Christ. Dr. George Barna of Barna Research Group states that the average Christian comes into contact with about seven "unchurched" people every day. He also states that if the Christian were to invite each of these seven people to church, four would say they would come, and two would actually show up. That means that if ten members would invite seven people for each of the five days in any given week, there would be 100 new visitors in that church on Sunday. Thats exciting.
