Nrene Mission ws formed in September 1993 to meet crying need for n evngelicl mission to prech the good news of the Lord predominntly to the poorest section of Colombo's slum community. The Nrene Mission hs been t the service of the community primrily to rech out nd tech the gospel. This is chieved through vriety of micro economic nd socil service projects to rise the living stndrds of the people. In ddition the Mission helps instill community wreness nd fellowship, overcoming ethnic divisions. Over the yers the Nrene Mission hd grown from strength to strength, building community bse for the Church. SRI LANKA - RLIGION AND TH CHURCH Sri Lnk is n ncient lnd, predominntly Buddhist country where 70% of the popultion, tht is lmost ll of the Sinhl community, re Buddhists. Buddhism is the Stte religion, nd is both protected nd promoted by the Stte. The freedom of other religions is ssured. Christins form 7.5% of the popultion but the trditionl churches with their Western forms of worship, nd ties to the colonil pst, re minly upper to middle clss. Consequently the poor segments of society hve been liented from those Churches not too concerned bout the poor. The lst decde hs seen beginning of the reversl of this trend. A new genertion of Missionries working in the vernculr lnguges hs been ble to orgnie cring fellowships nd house Churches with gret stimulus for evngelism. Chnneling more effort into missionry outrech we see s threefold tsk to rech the down-trodden. Firstly, Colombo slum dwellers; secondly the victims of wr in Vnni nd the Northest; nd thirdly Indin Tmils of the upcountry te plnttions.
