CHURCH HISTORY

The A.M.E. Zion Church was organized in New York City in 1796. It soon became known as "The Freedom Church" due to the slavery abolitionist activism of its members. Well known Zionites include Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas. Forged out of the oppression of slavery, pruned in the hostile environment of Jim Crow, diligent to its members through the Civil War, Great Depression and two World Wars, the A.M.E Zion Church has withstood the tests of time with God as its guide. Today, the A.M.E. Zion Church has over 1.6-million members, with active congregations in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Saint James A.M.E. Zion Church began as a part-time school and church ran by Rev. Riddle in the late 1800's. It was formally organized on June 16,1911 in the city of Rome, GA. Under the leadership of Rev. B.J. Jones, the church moved to its current location on the corner US Hwy 27 North and Maxwell Lane on May 1,1922. The previous church building served as a worship center for the community for 93 years. With Rev. Dr. Clarice Ford at the helm, a new church building was dedicated at this location on March 6, 2005. Today, under the direction of Rev. Richard Williams Jr., St. James has a vibrant congregation who believe in sharing the gospel message and goodness of God with all the people they meet. St. James is a member of the Atlanta District of the Georgia Conference of the South Atlantic Episcopal District, under the leadership of Bishop Kenneth Monroe. The pastor and members of Saint James invite all who are interested in receiving salvation through Jesus Christ to come and worship with us. "Therefore, Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19. We are a growing church with Youth/Children activities. Serving God is what we do!
