Luke 2:10-11 There have been many misconceptions about who needs the Saviour. Some think God would embrace only deserving people. Thus those who have lived a good life are thought worthy of receiving and celebrating the holy birth. Others feel they have been so good that they need no Saviour. As a result of this many have died in unbelief. The angels who proclaimed the Saviour's birth said it was "good news...for all the people." No one is excluded-not even the worst sinner. In fact, the good news is meant particularly for people who cannot and do not deserve God's favor- for sinners who would be otherwise lost. Historically, people have tried to ostracize those they deem unworthy; yet they are the very ones the Saviour searches out and receives. Does this mean those who strive to be good are excluded? Not at all! The good news is not based upon our merits, but upon God's grace. We all need the Saviour and the angels' message is for us- each and every one of us. Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You that the Saviour has been born for me and for all people. Grant that we may rejoice in Him. Amen.
John 3:5-6 When I was young my mother taught me, "If you break it, you must fix it." And, "If you amke a mess, you must clean it up." A big part of growing up is learning to take responsibility for one's actions/ This commonsense approach solves many of life's problems, both large and small. But sinful human reason applies this also to the mess we have made with God by our sin. It misinterprets Jesus' words "You must be born again" as instructions to us, for us to do. Jesus Himself points out how impossible this is for us. He interprets His own words, saying we must be born of water and the Spirit. Clearly, this is the Spirit's work. He must give us new birth. He must give us life. The Holy Spirit gives us the new birth through our Baptism into Christ. Holy Baptism is the "washingof makes Christ's death and resurrection our own (Romans 6:3-4). Baptism "now saves you... by the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:21). It ties us to the Holy Trinity, so that we are His and He is ours, to the very close of the age. He cleaned our mess for us, and He made everything new!
