First Lady Angela D. Black A native of Los Angeles, California, Angela Denise was born to Albert and Doris Gilbert. Angela is the youngest of six girls. As the youngest child in a family dominated by females, she had many role models and very close examples of how a little girl grows up to be a respected young woman. Angela, also, received her education in Southern California. She graduated from Ninety-Fifth Street Elementary School in South Los Angeles as the Student Body President. After sixth-grade she attended a predominately Caucasian junior high school, as she was chosen to participate in one the school district's new busing programs. After completing three years in the program at Northridge Junior High, she and her parents agreed that she would return to the inner-city for high school and enjoy her senior high years with her peers. She graduated from George Washington High School in good academic standing and was well respected for her roles in student government, academic and social clubs, and many other activities. Angela spent the following four years at California State University of Northridge as a Speech Communications major. Angela has spent her entire life in the church. She proudly acknowledges her membership at True Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles where she accepted Christ and was baptized at age twelve. She received her training under the pastoral care of Reverend J.J. Jones. During her membership at True Grace she was the President of the Youth Department and coordinator of youth programs and activities. She began teaching the children's Sunday school class at age 16. Angela was a very faithful, loyal, and active member until she departed to wed Rev. John Alden Black, Jr. This blessed day of Holy matrimony took place on December 25, 1982. From this union came three wonderful children. Ashley Nicole, Jonathon Gilbert and Alden J. Angela has been blessed with some very rewarding and equally interesting career opportunities. She has spent over a decade in key roles in two prominent non-profit organizations. She developed her managing and international relations skills with United Support of Artist for Africa (USA for Africa), the creators of the song, We Are the World. This organization compassionately responded to the 1985 famine crises in Ethiopia and evolved into a major contributor of funds to various agencies throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Angela is currently employed with World Vision International, a Christian, humanitarian ministry providing assistance to children and families world-wide. Because of her international and multi-cultural experiences, in 1992 she received an opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream to visit the continent of Africa. The trip to Dakar, Senegal in West Africa is one the most memorable and significant events of her life. She witnessed, first-hand, how people are forced to live in appalling conditions in under-developed country.

Church History

It was the winter of 1976 when Pastor and Mrs. John A. Black, Sr. organized Victory Temple Prayer Tower. Their vision to become leaders of a successful, spirit-filled ministry ordained by God was being realized with this passage of scripture resounding in their hearts; …and upon this rock I will build my church…(Matthew 16:18.) Starting in a Los Angeles storefront chapel that seated approximately seventy-five people, on 105th and Main streets, the journey to fulfill their purpose in ministry began. They started with prayer and praise services on Thursday afternoons. In a short time two-week night services were added. As the services increased so did the number of worshippers. Because of their compassion for souls, the Lord honored their dedication and blessed the ministry to grow and grow. Soon the storefront was too small and the ministry was forced to move to a larger facility. The new location was the birthplace of the Victory Temple Holiness Church (V.T.H.C.) , 620 East 48th Street at Avalon. On the first Sunday of September 1978 the first service was held at V.T.H.C. It was obvious the Lord was pleased with the planting of this seed. As these co-laborers tenaciously worked to develop others for the vineyard, many people were saved, set free and delivered through the anointing power bestowed on this ministry. Pastor and Mrs. Black, Sr. continued their work, faithfully, for twenty-one years. In 1996 Pastor Black decided it was time to pass the "mantle" and the responsibilities of pastoral care to his son, Elder John Black, Jr., who already had over 20 years experience in the ministry as a national evangelist, teacher and lecturer. This momentous event took place Wednesday, March 19, 1997. And the legacy continues… Elder John Black, Jr. and his wife, Angela D. Black, accepted the challenge with energy and determination and set out, in full pace, to continue the vision. Their pursuit for excellence in ministry included adapting the motto, "building people to advance the kingdom." The transition did not interfere with the vision set in 1976. It was enhanced. Within the first year of ministry under their leadership the membership witnessed God's favor and fruit of their labor. New members were added, children's church was organized, and the first weekend long leadership conference took place, off-site, in January 1998. Through concentrated biblical teaching and mentoring they have combined tradition with an urban contemporary approach to ministry and, by example, represent what "kingdom building" is all about.
