In October 1886 the Rev. Paul Branke organized the first congregation belonging to the former German Evangelical Synod of North America. He used the name Peace Congregation "Friedensgemeinde", and he built a church within six month at 7 th Street and Erie Street. Rev. Branke left in 1896 to go to San Francisco to build another church. Rev. Scholz became Pastor and due to unknown reasons left the German Evangelical Synod in 1901, with a considerable portion of the congregation. The remnant now without pastoral leadership was served by Rev. C. F. Off, a retired minister of the Evangelical Synod. Worship sevices were held at the new Adventist Church on Carr Street, between Main and Grand Avenue. Within several month Rev. Frederick Bettex arrived to assume responsibility for the congregation, yet he left within several months and Rev. Off again had to step in to help. The Synod designated Rev. Otto Satzinger to become Pastor, however Rev. Off took no chances this time and he reorgnized the Friedensgemeinde and changed its name to St. Paul's in February of 1902.
