A Brand New Kind of Worship and Learning Ministry

Sonrise Community Ministry was born out of a long search by some friends and I to find a kind of worship service that was neither traditional (stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, sing this, sing that, give us your money) or contemporary. (I'm just a singer in a gospel rock n roll band?"jump down turn around grab a bale of shouting and waving?). There is nothing wrong with traditional or contemporary. But as pastor, I found over years of preaching that we preachers work all week on a 15 minute sermon, deliver it, and few get it or remember it. So my friends and I started Sonrise Community Ministry, a ministry that is focused on worshipping God, but also on learning about God. Se we meet every Sunday Morning in a run down building in Mulliken, Michigan. Instead of setting in rows of pews, we sit at tables. We share the things God has done for us in our lives during the past week, and then we share our concerns. I do children's sermon and then the youth go off to Youth Education (Sunday School). After that we adults continue with the book or letter of the Bible that we've been working on and study it in depth. It may seem complex when you read this; that we look at the history, the Hebrew or Greek, what it meant when it was written and how we can apply it to our lives today. But it is really quite simple. An English word, "love," for example can be translated back into ancient Greek and have four meanings. We can figure how the speaker or writer meant the word "love," and how the passage can be used by us in our lives today. We also believe what James wrote, "Faith without works is dead." It is important to worship God and learn about God but we need to work in the kingdom of God for God as well. As a ministry we support local missions and youth in the community. Those that are connected to the ministry by Internet can support and work in the Kingdom in whatever way they feel led by God from their homes or in their own communty. This is a venue for those that may want to worship, learn, and be part of a Ministry without leaving the comfort of home. It is also helpful to folks that for whatever reason, are not able to leave there home or nursing home.
