An Introduction
A very natural question arises when people meet us: they want to know what denomination we are and what our doctrinal statement is. These are common and almost expected ways religious groups have of identifying and categorizing themselves. Perhaps the following will serve as an answer to that type of question.
We are not affiliated with any denomination, non-denomination, or inter-denomination of the Christian faith, but seek only, under the headship of Christ, to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. Our hearts are open to God's entire people that desire to be ready for the soon return of our Lord.
You will find it difficult, if not impossible, to fit us into any religious category. Our "doctrinal statement" is the Bible. We actively acknowledge Christ as the Head of His Body, the Church and look to Him to feed the sheep from the Word as we have need.
Even Paul, with all the revelation he had, said, "We know in part, and we prophecy in part." (I Cor. 13:9). Proverbs 4:18 says, "But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day." The mistake men have made has been to establish rigid systems of doctrinal interpretation out of their partial understanding. Thus we have, at the least, hundreds of doctrinal systems at serious variance with one another. Which shall we believe? Which set of "religious glasses" shall we use when we read the word?
Religion wants to fit us with glasses; the Lord Jesus wants to open our eyes. Religion, if it shows us the word at all, shows it to us through a filter of tradition and/or interpretation. The Lord wants us to be free to preach and believe the word as it is. What happens with doctrinal traditions is that they become a substitute for the word. Instead of preachers being called and taught of the Lord to minister as He reveals and anoints, they are trained to become defenders and promoters of their tradition. Even where they may believe some true things, all to often, the truth is dead and ineffective.
[The above is adapted and used by permission from a Christian brother, Phil Enlow of The Midnight Cry Messenger.]
With this in mind, We offer this as a proposed Statement of Faith. The basic principles for rule and discipline of the church as well as for its articles of faith are recorded in the Word of God. Any statement of faith or operating policy should be in harmony with those principles.
Based on this premise: That the Word of God is truth therefore WE BELIEVE:
1. That the Scriptures (Bible), both Old and New Testaments, are the divine inspired Word of God, the complete revelation of His Will for the salvation of men, and the divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life.
2. In One God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in Three Persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
3. That Jesus Christ is the Son of God, truly God and truly Man, conceived of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. He was resurrected bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven where at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.
4. That the ministry of the Holy Spirit, fully God and Teacher and Guide in this age to all men, is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He is working in the regeneration of sinners, the sanctification of believers, to indwell, instruct and empower for godly living and Christian service.
5. That man was created in the image of God, but through disobedience he became a lost sinner, and only through regeneration can salvation and reconciliation with God be obtained through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
6. That the true Church is composed of all redeemed persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ are united together in the one body of Christ of which He is the Head and His agent the Spirit of God inhabits and directs the church and its members. We believe in the royal priesthood of believers and in the exercise of spiritual gifts in the church with signs and wonders following believers to confirm the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
7. That water baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper are ordinances to be observed by the church. They are, however, not to be regarded as the means of salvation. The washing of feet is observed as enjoined by our Lord.
8. In the Kingdom of God as proclaimed and established by our Lord Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry, and as taught and perpetuated by His apostles.
9. In the foundational truths of repentance from dead works, faith toward God, the doctrine of baptisms, of the laying on of hands, of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
10. We believe in the Personal Second Coming of Christ. We believe in the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment of all mankind, the eternal reward and everlasting life of the believers and the eternal judgment of the unbelievers.
Statement of Mission for the Way Home Fellowships
Of the Church at Lampasas, Texas, U.S.A.
Vision: On Dec. 19, 2000 The Holy Spirit gave Charles (Chuck) Skeen a vision of the local church at Lampasas, Texas. He saw 16 small groups of about 20 - 40 folks gathered together in the park meeting in fellowship, communion, and worship of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Spirit of the Lord spoke to him saying "This is My church and I am returning all of My church to its intended Way." So Brother Chuck started searching the Scriptures for `The Way' that the Spirit was speaking of to him. The Book of the Acts of the Apostles is the `genesis' of the church as laid out by the Lord Jesus in His gospels. The Letters or Epistles that make up the majority of the New Testament concern the LIFE, Government, and Ministries the Lord has ordained for the church in this age. It is from this premise that we establish our foundation for the life and work of the church.
There are others who have joined us in this work and ministry and life of our local church establishment with much the same type of vision. Please feel free to inquire of any one of us as to this vision.
Definition of the Church: the `called out ones', the `assembly' of the body of believers' universal who are joined by their revelation and confession that Jesus is the Son and Christ of God our Father. (Matt. 16: 13- 19; Jn.13: 6-7; Eph. 1:23; 4:1-6; Col.1:18; 1 Cor. 3:16-17; 6:19-20; 1 Peter 2: 4-10)
Definition of the church(es): the body of believers who belong to the universal body of Christ but reside in one physical location as determined by the Word of God make up the local church. (Acts 13:1; Letters to the Churches in Rev.; Heb. 10:25)
We advocate the formation of small home groups as witnessed in Acts 2:46 and the letters to the churches in the Epistles. These small groups of believers are better equipped to carry out the mission & ministry of the Life of the churches in their communities by alleviating the burden to maintain buildings and the such. This allows the members of the local church to be enabled to spend the money & resources on the real building of Jesus - the people of God. (Matt. 18:20; 1 Cor. 14; Eph. 4:11-16)
Mission: The mission of the Church and churches is the same. Our first and foremost job is to win the souls of men to the salvation of Jesus Christ. We have received this commission from the Lord Jesus Himself and are enabled by the Holy Spirit to carry it out. (Lk. 4:18-19; Matt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-18; Acts 1:8; 2:38-39)
Our second job is to love one another as he has loved us and to build up the Church /churches of Jesus Christ. (Jn. 13:1-10,12-17; 15: 9-17; 1 Cor. 12:1-11; ch. 13; Gal. 5:22-25; Eph 4:11-16) We carry out this second part of the mission by treating one other as the Word of God commands - by meetings the needs of each other. (Matt. 26:31-40; Acts 2:43-47; 2 Cor. 9:6-15)
Our third job is to instruct each other in the Word of God to our growth and fruitfulness. We do this by founding and establishing ourselves personally and jointly on the basic doctrines of Christ as taught by the Apostles. (Acts 2: 42; 15: 23-29; Heb. 6:1-2) We are also to keep order in and among the believers as modeled in the Bible. (Matt. 18: 15- 20 & the Letters to Cor.) And by allowing the Holy Spirit to appoint and maintain the leadership in the churches. (Acts 14: 21-24; 1 Tim. 5:22; 1 Peter 5:2-5) We are to pray for one another. (Gal. 6:2 &10; Jms. 5:13-19)
Our mission is to win men to the kingdom of God by salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, to encourage them to meet together to pray, study, preach and practice the Gospel of Jesus Christ as empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Basic Doctrines of the Church(es): The word doctrine is defined as teachings of a particular group of disciples. We are Christians and so we advocate the doctrine that is taught by Jesus and preached by His Apostles.
The basic doctrine for the church(es) can be found in Heb. 6:1-2. They are:
1. Repentance from dead works,
2. faith in God,
3. baptisms (yes plural- there is more than one),
4. the laying on of hands (for multiply purposes),
5. the resurrection of the dead,
6. and eternal judgment.
We believe that all further doctrine and it's revelation to the churches is built upon this foundation. We also believe that God the Holy Spirit is restoring the Truth to the churches in terms of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the five fold ministry to the body of Christ. We believe that the teaching of this doctrine to the churches will bring about the Church prepared in spirit & truth & holiness for the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
