First Female Presiding Elder in 6th District
On May 27th, 2000 the first female Presiding Elder for the Sixth Episcopal District of African Methodism was appointed by Bishop Donald George Kenneth Ming as he held his final Post Conference Meeting as Presiding Prelate for the Sixth Episcopal District. The response from the assembled congregation, of Clergy and Lay Members, was one of jublilant joy when The Reverend Ella Mae Smiley received the appointment from Bishop Donald George Kenneth Ming. The event took place at St. Philip AME Church in Decatur, GA where The Reverend George Moore, Sr. serves as Senior Pastor. Now serving under the leadership of Bishop Frank Curtis Cummings, Presiding Elder Smiley is happy to report that she has received excellent cooperation from the Clergy and Laymen of the Augusta-Athens Presiding Elder District. Presiding Elder Smiley also wishes to express her thanks to Bishop and Mrs. Cummings for their support and encouragement, as well the acceptance from the Presiding Elders Council, which consists of Reverends: Ben Ridley, President, Charlie Tatmon, L. J. Jones, H. E. Terrell, Ben Gay, J. B. Robinson, Elijah Smith, Hurtis R. Ricks, C. E. Shepheard, Johnnie Raven, T. R. Wakefield, Robert Plummer, Earle Ifill, S. W. Wicker, Melvin Colquitt, and Henry Frazier. She also wishes to thank the entire 6th District for being so supportive. It has proven to be a blessing for Presiding Elder Smiley that her associate Presiding Elder is one she served under as pastor for an estimated ten years. She learned many aspects of the position of Presiding Elder by serving as Presiding Elder Hurtis R. Ricks' Administrative Secretary. The Augusta - Athens District has a total of 40 churches, 23 pastors, 2 ordained preachers not pastoring, seven licentiates and one licensed evangelist. Presiding Elder Smiley reports that "The Work is All Divine!"
