Information:

The Orthodox Church in the Caribbean is part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. The Metropolis is directly under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, and His Eminence Archbishop Athenagoras is the local hierarch, with offices in Mexico City, Mexico. Archimandrite Michael is the Vicar-General for the Caribbean. All Services in Haiti are in French and Haitian Kreyol.

The Orthodox Church in the Caribbean sponsors two parochial schools in Haiti, mainly established to help poor children who would otherwise have no chance for education. There is no free public education in Haiti. One school (St. George's in Pétion-Ville) has 350 students this year, and the other school (Holy Resurrection in Metivier) has 189. The schools are among those with the lowest tuition in Haiti, and they are both certified with the Ministry of Education. The Church solicits scholarship assistance from among friends and supporters: $US 8.00 per month per student… for 12 months. Father Deacon Barnabas (a Haitian) is the Director of St. George's.

The Church also sponsors several medical clinics which are free for the patients. Financial support for medical staff is provided by the Orthodox Church Mission Center of St. Augustine, Florida and by friends in the USA and elsewhere. Medicines are provided free to the patients, and are received by us from donations made in the USA. There are three clinics, open on different days.

The Church in Haiti also sponsors several cottage industries which provide income for the workers. The industries include a candle-making factory; a mop-making factory; an art studio; a greeting card-making business; and a barber shop.

Archimandrite Michael is the only foreigner in the Church in Haiti. All other clergymen and staff-members are local Haitians. Fr. Michael has been in Haiti for 13 years and is originally from New Jersey. He is a widower and a former Episcopal clergyman. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University (BS) and the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky (M.Div.) He also attended St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary in Crestwood, NY; Temple University in Philadelphia, PA; and Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.
