Mission & Brief History

Our mission is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional, and environmental needs fo all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed. Luderitz is historic not only to the Namibian nation, but also to the AME Church in the sense that many AME sailors entered this harbour town prior to the official organization of the Church in this country. Th1980 re-arrangemtn of work led to the establishment of the Luderitz District, since the Keetmanshoop District covered the whole of far-southern Namibia - the district was too vast! The late Rev. Johannes Ludwig, our first Presiding Elder in 1980, was one of the founders and was amongst the group of 4 who delivered the break-away letter to the German Rhynish Missionary Society on July 3rd, 1946. He was succeeded in 1984 by the Rev. Albert E. Koopman, who, laboured and inspired people to build churches. His masterplan led to the completion of three church buildings in 1995. He was, however, transferred in 1994 to the Keetmanshoop District and was succeeded by Rev. Dr. N C Christians under whose administration C. Fredericks AME Church and Elim AME Church were completed and dedicated by Bishop McKinley Young in 1995. Rev. Andreas Biwa, our current able administrator, was appointed in 1997 when his predecessor retired. He has lifted the moral of the people and inspire ministers to double and triple their local income. Thus, giving the Mission Statement meaning on local level. Rev. Andreas Biwa was the first post-independence and first Namibian to become mayor of Keetmanshoop, the capital of the south. He is former teacher and headmaster and is now the Senior Literacy Officer in the Namibian government's Ministry of Basic Education and Culture. He is married to Mrs Sophie Biwa (nee lambert), the current Conference Branch WMS President and have five children.
