Pastor' Commentary

Like the magificent oak tree, the Weems Chapel United Methodist Church has cast a large shadow across Pearl River County. Countless men and women have benefitted from the shade of her branches. We have heard it said that "you can tell a tree by the fruit it bears." Weems Chapel has in the past and continues to place good fruit before the presence of God. We are "Growing Stronger With Time."

As we prepare to enter the new millenium, let us use this worldwide web page as a reminder of where we have come from. Let us use this page to remember where God has brought us from. If it had not been for the grace and glory of God, where would we be? Our God has been with us through the years. He has never failed us. In the book of Psalms you will often see the word "Selah." This word means to pause. When the reader of Psalms comes upon the word "Selah" they should stop reading and wait a while. Before we go into the new millenium, let us pause for a while to look back. Look back and see how God brought us through dangers, toils, snares and pitfalls. There was never a time that God allowed our foot to slip. During times of war and famine God has put food on our tables and clothes on our backs. We should be grateful. The pages of tomorrow lay before us ready to be written. Ordinary people like us write these pages. People who know what God has called them to do. So let us march forward with confidence and boldness into the year 2000, being more eager to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

History of Weems Chapel

In 1914 Weems Chapel began when a black store owner named George Weems, for whom the church is named, donated the land and building he used as a toolhouse for a place of worship. According to the cornerstone, in 1915, the church was erected as Weems Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, under the leadership of Rev. E. P. Chapman.

Fourteen years later, in 1928 a new building was constructed. It was equipped with electric lights, new pews for comfort, and a bell. The pastor at that time was Rev. W. M. Emerson. Renovations were done in 1952 under the leadership of Rev. L. W. Smith. Rev. H. A. Brown envisioned a parsonage which was completed under the leadership of Rev. J. C Price. By 1978 the membership grew to 210 under the leadership of Rev. Phillip Heidelberg. A new structure with a maximum seating capacity of 305, was built to accomodate the new growth in 1983. In 1996 under the leadership of Elder Bobby E. Dailey, Weems Chapel has become a fulltime (meeting every Sunday for worship) church. God continues to bless Weems Chapel because the Church is dedicated to bringing individuals to Christ.
