A Brief Thought
Top Ten Reasons
Recently there has been a rash of "mail" making the rounds of our communities listing reasons why some
people don't go to Church. The last one I got looked like this -
10. Can't find a polyester leisure suit anywhere
9. Relate to jazz and rock more than Handel and Bach
8. Would rather sleep in my own bed than in a pew
7. One word: hypocrites!
6. Already served time as a child
5. I gave at the office
4. During organ music, start craving Doger Dogs
3. Can only remember three commandments
2. Feel guilty enough already
and the number reason -
1. because they haven't tried (whatever) Church!
Perhaps they are true, maybe the Church is less than it ought to be in many cases,
but I want you know why I gather with the family on Sunday. So here are the top ten reasons why I do it -
10. I will meet people there who are just like me! And maybe they can help me stop focusing only on myself.
9. God has commanded me to not forsake the gathering of the Body!
8. It is the base camp for beginning to accomplish the Great Commission.
7. I can join others in singing praises to my Heavenly Father.
6. It is where I can learn and share the Truth.
5. I have the opportunity to give myself and my resources to others.
4. I discover people struggling with the same problems I have.
3. I can find forgiveness, care, and llove.
2. I can provide forgiveness, care and llove.
And the number one reason I do it is because -
1. I recognize that the Church is His Body, and I llove Him with all my heart, soul , mind and strength.
Now I know the critics will be quick to proclaim that these mail pieces are designed to get
the "unchurched" (our newest euphemism for the lost) into the building.
Where do we find that in the design of God?
Aren't we supposed to go out, into the World and share the Good News?
Isn't the marketplace our mission field?
Maybe, when my maturity level, brought about by the right actions of the Church, is sufficient,
I won't need to find excuses for people not coming to Church,
but instead will bring those I have won to Christ with me!
