OUR DIOCESE AND OUR CHURCH

Christ the Saviour Church is a member of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese, a canonical, autonomous jurisdiction of the Eastern Orthodox Church, headquartered in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and under the protection of His All-Holiness, BARTHOLOMEW I, pictured here. As "the Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch," every canonical local or world-wide Orthodox Church is in full communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch. The Throne of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is in modern-day, Istanbul, Turkey. He is the "first among equals" of all Orthodox Patriarchs--the visible "spiritual father" of the Orthodox Church, serving many times as its spokesman, but at no time exercising "temporal jurisdiction" over the Church universal. He is the 270th successor of the Apostle Andrew, and twice visited the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese to address the faithful and bless diocesan facilities.

We enjoy the spiritual leadership and arch-pastoral, fatherly guidance of His Eminence, Metropolitan NICHOLAS of Amissos, ruling hierarch of our diocese, who is pictured here following the fourth ordination to the priethood of vocations from Christ the Saviour Church--Frs. David Moriak, George York, Rodion Pfeiffer and Daniel Montville. Our diocese, through the leadership of Metropolitan NICHOLAS and the consistent love-offerings and bequeaths of its 25,000 faithful maintain Christ the Saviour Seminary, headquartered in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, which is fully accredited by the State of Pennsylvania to grant a B.Th degree and is linked with the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North and South America to grant a D.Min degree in cooperation with Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The diocese also provides camping sessions for youth and educational conferencing for people of all ages through Camp Nazareth Youth and Retreat Conference Center in Mercer, Pennsylvania, an accredited member of the Christian Camping Foundation. The diocese publishes, as well, the bi-weekly newspaper--"The Church Messenger," a member of the Associated Church Press.

CHRIST THE SAVIOUR AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH in North Royalton is a welcoming, all English speaking community founded in l964. We are one local community of over 160 national diocesan churches. We exist to bring "the good news of Jesus Christ" in the fellowship of community and in the grace of His Sacraments to all believers and strive to deepen their faith in the Living God, our Lord Jesus Christ.

We do this through a variety of sacraments and ministries in the church, the crown of which is the Eucharist celebrated in each Divine Liturgy. We confess as the basis of our Faith the Holy Scriptures. We practice our Faith according to Holy Tradition handed down to us from the great Fathers and Mothers of the Church and according to the doctrinal and disciplinary canons of the first Seven Ecumenical Councils of the "undivided Christian Church."

We confess the Nicene Creed in its original form, without the later addition of the double procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father "and the Son," we reject any notion of papal infallibility, but subscribe to the Apostolic conciliarity of the church, viewing all canonical bishops as sharing equally in the charism of the Holy Spirit's grace--infallibility lying ONLY within the Church Universal called together in Holy Council; we view the Virgin as the first redeemed of all creation, but reject nuances such as the "immaculate conception;" likewise we honor and revere the saints as models of the "church triumphant" and intercessors for us still on our journey to salvation; icons adorn our church as "windows into heaven," calling to mind for all of us the miracle working power of Our Saviour and His Saints in redeeming us and all creation; and we take seriously the call of our Saviour "to be holy, even as I am holy."

In order to facilitate each one of us on our pilgrimage to holiness, we hold healing services for those sick in body and soul, and gather together on an as-needed basis, to serve those who hurt or seek discernment for their lives. We prayer-network, buddy-system and do whatever is necessary to make Christ "alive" for you, and not some historical and musty figure living in the past, for we devoutly believe that "traditionalism is the past faith of the dead;" whereas, "tradition is the present faith of the living." We are committed to creating new and personal "idioms" to communicate the changeless message of salvation through faith and grace to each individual, geared to the personal need of each person.

WE HAVE SEEN AND WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!

Hundreds of faithful were anointed with myrhh, a fragrant oil miraculously appearing on the surface of an icon of St. Nicholas brought to Camp Nazareth from St. George Orthodox Church, Michigan City, Indiana, for the Diocese's Annual Pilgrimage in honor of the Mother of God. As God's Holy Wisdom would have it, this was Fr. Michael's first pastoral assignment and the current priest, his first altar boy over 20 years ago!

We are a small enough faith community so that no one is a number on a roster, anonymous to the clergy or fellow parishoners, but large enough in physical and spiritual resources, to tailor the ministry of Christ to uniquely meet the felt-needs and spiritual aspirations of each person as a unique and unreplicable child of God. As created in "his image and likeness," His and our goals are to restore this image fully in you.

YOU ARE SPECIAL!

UNLIKE many Orthodox churches, you don't need to become "Russian," "Ukrainian" or "Greek" or any other ethnicity to be welcomed or nurtured at our church. We are Orthodox AND American AND in consistent and unbroken communion with the Great Church of Christ, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The succession of our clergy and bishops requires no tortured "geneaology," but exists in the dyptychs of ALL canonical Orthodox Patriarchates. We do not import old-world, ethnic conflicts into our community or to engage in "redacted," and self-serving re-writings of history, as can be, regretably, found on some uncanonical "Orthodox" sites on this server. The heresies of "phyletism" and "schism" from the Mystical Body of Christ by substituting national identity for the Holy Gospel, marketed by bogus hierarchs (in truth,"heresiarchs,") having no valid succession and rejected by all Orthodox canonical Sees only can result in YOUR spiritual harm.

The TRUE universality of the gospel message of salvation "in whom there is neither Greek nor Jew;" can never be obscured by the FALSE palaver of hyper-nationalism bedded in concocted ecclesial structures. HIS WORDS can only be "rightly dispensed" by those who are in direct apostolic succession and communion with the holy fathers of the church, thereby providing the double Graces of dispensing valid sacraments and providing salvific personal example.

Fr. Michael After A Sermon

THE CHURCH MUST BE THE TRUE CHURCH TO SAVE YOU, BUT WHO MUST YOU BE?

FOR US YOU JUST SIMPLY NEED TO BE YOU!

The Mystical Body of Christ, of which we are a part, is a "hospital for sinners" and not a "country club for the saved." And we recognize that "all fall short of the glory of God." We are here to mutually assist each other in the prevention of "backsliding," and to console and restore the wholeness of personhood that sin disrupts.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD WELCOMES ALL REGARDLESS OF RACE, COLOR, NATIONALITY OR PERSONALITY!

What may you expect from us? Everything! Our "spiritual contract" with you is to uplift you when you are down-hearted, cry with you and the family and friends of your departed, rejoice in the personal successes in your life, and walk arm-in-arm and shoulder-to-shoulder with you on our mutual journey to salvation in Christ.

Our pastor, who is also a Professor of Counseling, Chaplain to the Parma Detective Bureau and North Royalton Police Department and sits on the Board of Directors of St. Mary of Egypt Sanctuary, under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, as well as a syndicated religious columnist is well suited by professional training, temperament and years of "spiritual apprenticeship" in this country and abroad to offer you genuine spiritual "fatherhood,"--through the Grace of the Holy Spirit-- in both the contexts of individually-oriented personal guidance and the in the discernment of the potential for the very best in each of you. He will offer you not only the Holy Sacraments,--the very "fountains of life"-- but a listening ear, attentive heart, as well as the often now-forgotten practical ministry of visits to your home or hospital bed, as well.

Our doors are never locked to you; our phones are never off the hook when you need us. Each member of Christ the Saviour knows first-hand the truth of the words of our late +Bishop John (Martin:)
"If YOU were the only person on earth, Jesus Christ would still have died for you."

These words are our faith pledge to you. No one need ever fear anything in his or her life--past misdeeds or present life circumstances--that could or would keep you from becoming part of our community and experiencing the all-embracing love of Our Saviour. "For it was for freedom that Christ set us free" And we believe and confess that true Freedom as opposed to personal license can only be found in bringing the discovery and knowledge of true self face-to-face with the Person and works of our Saviour, who though always Almighty is above all the Good Shepherd, always searching for the one lost sheep.

We will not offer you one set of beliefs this year and a newer "revised" set of beliefs next year; nor, will we ever mislead you in confusing that which is necessary for salvation with those things that are matters of "indifference" to salvation--personal beliefs and individual practices that you are free to pursue or ignore. Rather, we are committed to offering you the changeless Christ, as revealed in His 2000 year old Church, to each of you in your ever-changing world.

Where can you fit in? Anywhere you like! We have "prayer warriors," whose particular gift of the Holy Spirit is interceding in dialogue with Our Saviour for the needs of others. Some members pursue a more "active" ministry, and undertake a variety of charitable and community-based projects to help the disenfranchised and needy in our community. Are you an older person? You are welcome to join our Mens's Club--a social fellowshipping group that undertakes church betterment projects as well as community activities. Or, if you are female, you may choose to join our Ladies's Guild, who bake and host dinners, visit our sick and are Fr. Michael's arms and legs in maintaining communication with our elderly and shut-ins. Are you a teenager? Why not join our American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Youth Organization (ACRY)--Chapter 79? You'll undertake field trips in the community, participate in sports activities, make friends of your own age and learn how to put "works" in dialogue with "faith." Feel less active? That's okay, too. Individual Scripture reading, prayer and Eucharist are always and for everyone the primary way of making Christ known to you and you to Him.

Everyone, whether a "prayer-er" or a "doer" or a combination of both, is urged, however, to be part of our unique ST XENIA APOSTOLATE TO THE NEEDY, which through activities and love-offerings has distributed over $25,500 to homeless shelters; battered-women's groups, individual community members in need of that extra boost to get them back on their feet and re-establish their self-worth, as well as other local and national service organizations. The St. Xenia motivation has always been that it is only through giving to "the least of our brethren" that we receive the fullest and richest graces of God.

"Fitting in" at Christ the Saviour simply means leaving yourself open to the still voice of the Holy Spirit within you, who in His time will attract you to the ministry most suitable to your unique talents.
