LAST WEEK'S MESSAGE...BY APOSTLE J.V. PORTER

"A Father's Day Message"

"REMEMBER THE FORMER THINGS OF OLD: FOR I AM GOD, AND THERE IS NONE ELSE; I AM GOD, AND THERE IS NONE LIKE ME, DECLARING THE END FROM THE BEGINNING, AND FROM ANCIENT TIMES THE THINGS THAT ARE NOT YET DONE, SAYING, MY COUNSEL SHALL STAND, AND I WILL DO ALL MY PLEASURE." ISAIAH 46:9-10

Humanity today seems to drift from one extreme to the next. People are patterning themselves after basketball players, recording artist, extremist groups, or anything that is provocative or inciting. It seems as if everyone wants to be identified with something or someone. Humanity is in such an identity crisis that this hunger for recognition and identity has crept into the body of Christ.

Many people have lost their identity in Christ because they did not develop and maintain a proper attitude toward the things of God. As believers, our whole aim is to please the Father. "Furthermore, brethren, we beg and admonish you in [virtue of our union with] the Lord Jesus, that [you follow the instructions which] you learned from us about how you ought to walk so as to please and gratify God, as indeed you are doing, [and] that you do so even more and more abundantly [attaining yet greater perfection in living this life]." I Thessalonians 4:1. Our attitude toward the Word of God and toward those who have been assigned by God to deliver His Word to us is very important. You cannot expect to succeed in life with the wrong attitude - especially toward those whom you are serving..

If you are going to understand servanthood, one of the things that you must know when working for someone is whether you are in the military or on a public job, you are being paid to make someone else look good. In the church, when the seeds of disloyalty rise up, that pastor that you once humbled yourself to, loved, respected and cared for all of a sudden becomes your enemy. Why? Because you really did not have the heart of a servant. Along with the seed of disloyalty comes the disease of comparisonitis - the tendency to compare yourself with others.

In Luke 18:10-14, Jesus spoke a parable to people who trusted in themselves and were confident that they were righteous and scorned all others. "Two men went up into the temple [enclosure] to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee took his stand ostentatiously and began to pray thus before and with himself: God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of men --- extortioners, swindlers [unrighteous in heart and life], adulterers --- or even like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I gain. But the tax collector, [merely] standing at a distance, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but kept striking his breast, saying, O God, be favorable to me, the especially wicked sinner that I am! I tell you, this man went down to his home justified, rather than the other man; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

God gives grace to the humble -- not to the proud. We should have a humble attitude, knowing that apart from Him we are nothing. "I am the Lord; that is My name! And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to graven images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them." Isaiah 42:8. God knows you. He knows where you are. He has an individualized, personalized plan for your life -- unique and specialized just for you.

One thing that causes a lot of frustration is comparing yourself with someone else. The tendency to compare yourself with others can cause problems, create turmoil, and stir up strife. When you start comparing yourself with other people you will go to the extreme of not only talking about people, but to the point where you would even kill them.. "What leads to strife and how do conflicts originate among you? Do they not arise from your sensual desires that are ever warring in your bodily members? You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your desires go unfulfilled; [so] you become murderers. [To hate is to murder as far as your hearts are concerned.] You burn with envy and anger and are not able to obtain [the gratification, the contentment, and the happiness that you seek], so you fight and war. You do not have, because you do not ask. [Or] you do ask [God for them] and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures." James 4:1-3 There are people who are blaming others for things which they shouldn't be blaming them. Nobody can make you do the things you do. It is your choice as to when and how you do thing, but your attitude toward God and people must be correct.

According to the narrative in Genesis 4:4-5, Cain, the eldest son of Adam and Eve, and a tiller of the ground, and Abel, the second son and a keeper of sheep both brought to the Lord an offering. The Lord approved Abel's offering of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat portions, but He had no regard for the Cain's cereal offering. Both brothers had made the proper responses in offering to God the first fruits, but Cain's motives were not right. Cain sensed God's displeasure with his offering and he became angry and indignant. Cain compared himself to his brother Abel. Because he compared himself to his brother, he decided to kill him. "And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why do you look sad and depressed and dejected? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it." Genesis 4:6-7.

The enemy wants to destroy you. He wants you to give in . But hold fast to the faith. It is only a test. God did not bring you out to leave you. He gave you something that will last forever. You must make it last forever. "Therefore then since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance and that sin which so readily clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us. Looking away to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith and is also its Finisher. He, for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2

FIVE STEPS TO RECEIVING THE SPIRIT OF YOUR MENTOR

1. YOU CANNOT BE ULTRA-SENSITIVE. If you wear your feelings on your sleeves, your attitude will hinder the reception of the leader's spirit into your life.

2. YOU CANNOT BE INSECURE Antagonistic attitudes resulting from additions to the ministry team at your local assembly reveal a passion for preeminence among the brethren, which is an attitude that needs to die.

3. YOUR DREAM OR VISION MUST DIE SO THAT THE LEADER'S DREAM CAN LIVE. If your dream becomes more important than that of the corporate vision, you will not be able to receive your leader's spirit

4. BEWARE OF THE PRINCIPLE OF REBELLION. Delegation of authority comes from God. When you criticize God's servants, you are criticizing Him. When you honor God's servants, you also honor Him.

5. SERVE YOUR LEADER FROM A HEART OF COMMITMENT AND LOVE. The mentor is to be embraced, for it is through them that we are perfected and matured in the things of the Lord.
