The United Orthodox Church in America is a branch of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, (Ohijchuk succession). We embrace Holy Scriptures, Holy Tradition, the ancient Creeds, and the Ecumenical Councils. We are a Sacramental Church in which the Divine Liturgy is the chief Sacrament. We believe that our blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is the Head of the Church. Our mission is to provide an Orthodox frame for Christianity in an American ethos for the people in North America. We use both the Ukrainian and English language in Liturgy(depending on the make-up of the parish). We welcome inquiries. Please address them to any of the staff's email address above.
Holy Tradition:
We believe that Our Blessed Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ, passed down to the blessed Apostles, the power and structure for the Church. We believe that the early Church Fathers formed the Dogma.
Holy Scriptures:
We believe that our Heavenly Father inspired the Evangelists and Epistlers to record that which was incorporated in Holy Tradition along with specific events in the growth of the Church.
The Church:
We believe that the Church is the Body of Christ, which is the guardian of faith. This body consists of the faithful, clergy and laity. The mission of the Church is to serve God's people thereby glorifying Him.
The Sacraments:
We believe that God ordains the Sacraments for His people. We believe that the Sacraments are mysteries of God in our lives. The chief Sacraments are The Eucharist, Holy Baptism, Holy Chrismation (Confirmation), Holy Unction, Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders and Penance.
The Holy Eucharist:
We believe that the bread and wine, which are offered to God, become the Body and Blood of our Blessed Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ. The transformation is the Epiklesis of the Holy Spirit. We further believe that partaking of the Lord's Body and Blood follows His commandment. " So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him".
Holy Baptism:
We believe that Holy Baptism is essential to salvation. Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, you cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born anew". The Apostle Paul said, " Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life".
Holy Chrismation:
We believe in this sign of laying on of hands and anointing with Oil of Chrismation. The Apostle Paul said " In Him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit". In this act we are confirmed in the Love of God.
Holy Orders:
We believe in the three-fold ministry of the Church, that of Bishop, Priest and Deacon. The Bishops are the successor of the Apostles. Priests have sacerdotal functions of the Bishop, except that he may not confer Holy Orders. The Deacon is the one who serves the Church. The Apostle Paul said that Bishops are God's stewards and that the Office of Bishop is a noble task.
Holy Unction:
We believe that anointing with Holy Oil is used for healing of body, mind and soul. In the Gospel according to Saint Mark it is recorded, "And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them". The so called `Last Rites', for the dying is permitted as death is not a final thing, but a healing of God into His Kingdom.
Penance:
We believe that repentance is an important part of God's plan for salvation. The Acts of the Apostles tells us, "And Peter said to them, `Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'". Our Lord Jesus Christ uses this word for acceptance into the Kingdom of Heaven. The commission given by our Lord Himself is passed down to Bishops and Priests today. He said to His disciples, "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained".
Marriage:
We believe that God ordains marriage for a man and a women to join together as one flesh. It is for their mutual joy and propagation of children.
