The Orthodox Church is that Church originating in Israel after the Resurrection and which has preserved the faith and life of the Undivided Church ever since. We do not say that others fail to make this witness even if they have not maintained historical continuity with the Orthodox Church.
However, it remains true that the Great Schism in 1054 AD, when the Roman Catholic Church broke its links with us, and the later Reformation and Counter Reformation moved many, (but not all), Christians further away from the faith and life of the Orthodox Church which had been our united witness from the beginning.
Happily, many Christians in the West are now getting better acquainted with the Orthodox Church. We pray for and look forward to that day when Christians will stand together in a truly united Church and affirm her historic faith and life. No doubt, the Orthodox Church will have changed somewhat by then as well! She is by no means wedded to being Greek or Russian universally, nothwithstanding the great and historic importance of these Mother Churches. In the West, Orthodoxy is already changing its culture, but never its faith! Even so, "Maranatha," Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
We are an English speaking parish in the British Antiochian Orthodox Deanery which is part of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, Vicariate of Western Europe.
