About us and our history

The Order of Port Royal is part of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church independent of the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Its roots stretch back more than 300 years and since 1712 when it was granted asylum by the Roman Catholic See of Utrecht, it has been free of that authority.

Today the Order is reconstituted but faithful to the original canons and provides in communities where it is active, a sacramental ministry.

Port Royal is NOT a church but is a religious order of worker priests and people who serve the spiritual needs of the wider community. Its clergy and people live in the community and are required to work to provide for their needs and those of their families.

The clergy are under the authority of the Abbot Bishop of Port Royal and provide the sacramental presence in parishes and missions under the Order's jurisdiction.

Healing is a central part of the Order's ministry. There are in the Order priest and lay healers, some of whom are leading authorities in spiritual and physical healing of the body and the mind. Healing is a combination of the physical, the naturally medicinal and above all prayer. The anointing of the sick is the sacramental part of the healing ministry.

The Order, which was re-established in Germany in 1962, remained as a contemplative order until 1991 when, in response to the vision of public ministry of Abbot Peter and under his guidance the Order began to establish community churches. In 1991 St Kevin's in Korschenbroich, in 1993 St Lukes in Buchloe and in 1996 St Mary's in Vintl - Italy. Since 1997 the Order has established small missions in Dresden, Germany and London, United Kingdom.

Our Father Abbot was consecrated bishop upon his election by the convent in 1996 in line of Apostolic succession and thus brought to the Order its own Episcopal authority and its creation as an independent catholic diocese within the Holy Catholic Church.

THE MISSION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

In September 1997 the 2nd Provincial Council of Port Royal embodied the Society of Jesus Christ the King (United Kingdom) and its Ministry of Care into the Order and consecrated its Superior Dom Jonathan as Prior. The British Mission (The Priory of Jesus Christ the King) is charged with the establishment of the Order's first community church in Britain and the continuation of the work of the Ministry of Care under its auspices.

The Priory would welcome your prayers and your support in any way you can give it. We would especially like to hear from those already involved in a Christian healing ministry and from priests and lay people who believe they may be called by God to his work in the community. Enquiries are also invited from anyone who feels they have a vocation from God whether to the sacramental ministry or to any other form of service and are uncertain how this can best be tested and then encouraged to its fulfilment
