Hibben United Methodist Church is located in Mount Pleasant across the Cooper River from historic Charleston. Hibben's program of ministry strives to meet the spiritual, physical and social needs of the many different age levels which make up our congregation. In addition to worship services, Christian Education is provided to help our congregation gain further understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Being located in a fast growing community, Hibben is in a strategic location for vibrant ministry and outreach and we look forward to the years ahead as we go "about the Master's business".

The name Hibben comes from Major James Hibben who donated a piece of land in 1809 to the "Methodist Society" in Mount Pleasant. Around 1830, a church was built and there
were 12 charter members.
During the War Between the States, the church was used as a hospital. By 1868, it was so badly in need of repair that is was razed and the congregation met in the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church until 1899. A new building was started in November 1899 and completed in 1903. Within time, the congregation outgrew this building; land was acquired on the southwest corner of Coleman Boulevard and Vincent Drive. Construction on the new chapel began in November 1958 and the first service was held in September 1959.
Mount Pleasant continued to grow and so did Hibben's membership. Construction of a 6,000 square foot sanctuary was completed and the first worship service was conducted on December 19, 1984. Plans are currently underway to build a new Christian Life And Learning Center.
