BARKER Episcopal Church, South was founded in the year 1879. The President of the United States was Rutherford B. Hayes. The earliest deed, dated January 26, 1883, described a parcel of land deeded from Thomas and Helen Barker to the trustees of Barker's Church (John Powers, Thomas Barker, and Berry White). This land, containing two acres, adjoined the land of Thomas Barker on the Ten Mile Center Road. At one time Barker Normal College and Business University, also known as Barker Academy, belonged to Barker Church. It had a dormitory which housed students, some from many miles away. The school burned around 1915. The Lord has indeed blessed Barker UMC with a rich heritage.
Barker United Methodist Church is a community living in covenant with the Triune God and with one another. We profess the historic Christian faith in God incarnate in Jesus Christ for our salvation by the presence of the Holy Spirit. We are called to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ. We minister through Word, Sacrament, and Order. We affirm our commitment to the Connectional church, affirming that God has worked through and is working through the Wesleyan heritage. We believe in the transformation of grace and that love is alive. We proclaim Jesus Christ Lord!
