The Church of the Nazarene is a holiness denomination and has its roots in Wesleyan/Methodist tradition. The name "Nazarene" identifies our church with the title that was given to Jesus Christ (who grew up in the small village of Nazareth)in Matthew 2:23: 'He shall be called a Nazarene.' Therefore, the name "The Church of the Nazarene" signifies that we wish to be known as a church which is comprised of people who love and follow Jesus Christ, and wish to live in accordance with His teachings.
Officially, the Church of the Nazarene began in 1908 in the US and since then has spread rapidly all around the world. Currently, there are 2.7 million members in over 30,747 local congregations in 165 countries.
