Greetings!
Saskatoon Vineyard Christian Fellowship
has been a community of passionate followers of Jesus Christ
with a heart desire to share the love of God with the world around us.
Our church has been part of the Association of Vineyard Churches,
an international fellowship of churches with a heart to "do the stuff" of the Kingdom of God:
to live out the words & works of Jesus Christ in real life!
The Vineyard
Just like you can ask, "What does it mean to be Catholic?" or "What does it mean to be Lutheran?", it's fair game to ask "What does it mean to be Vineyard?" too! Here's a brief answer on several levels:
Beliefs
As Vineyard people we believe in taking Jesus seriously. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one can come to the Father except through him (John 14:6). Through Jesus we can come to the Father and personally know and experience the eternal God and maker of everything. We take Jesus so seriously that we believe Him when he says we are to do the same things that he did (Matthew 28:19-20, John 20:21). What did Jesus do? He proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of God--of God coming to rule and reign--and he also demonstrated God's rule had come by healing the sick, casting out demons, freeing the oppressed, and bringing good news to the poor.
Doctrinally, the Vineyard movement straddles both mainstream evangelicalism (Bible-believing, born-again Christianity, but without the harsh legalism of fundamentalism) and the charismatic movement (belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still for today). Someone once described Vineyard people as "empowered Evangelicals", and that probably describes us pretty well.
History
The Vineyard movement originated in the days of the Jesus People Movement and has some relationship with that movement. The movement began in 1977 as Calvary Chapel of Yorba Linda, California, pastored by John Wimber, a church growth consultant and a former musician who started the Righteous Brothers rock group. From 1977-82 the church was associated with Calvary Chapel, a family of churches founded by Chuck Smith and which played a key role in the Jesus People movement in the late 60s and early 70s. In 1982 John's church was blessed and released by Chuck to join Kenn Gulliksen's small family of "Vineyard" churches, and John's church became Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Anaheim. The movement has grown since then to include over 800 churches in more than 70 countries.
Organisation
The vehicle by which we try to fulfill our vision is planting churches. Our worldwide network of churches is relationally joined under the umbrella of the Vineyard Website! Vineyard International Consortium (VIC). The consortium is currently governmentally organised into local Associations of Vineyard Churches (AVCs) of which their are currently eight. Our governmental structure as a movement is essentially a blend of Spirit-led men and women whom God calls out and the Vineyard leadership affirms, together with supporting team of leaders.
Culture
Our worship music is contemporary but has a flavor somewhat different from mainstream Christian music. Our songs tend to focus on Jesus, and often use "You" instead of "Him" so we can sing to the Lord instead of about him. Our worship is often characterized by intimacy, but we can rock 'n' roll to the Lord too when we feel like it! Our dress code is casual--be yourself! Our teaching is Bible-based, focuses on Jesus, and includes stories and testimonies of how God is working in our lives today. Our fellowship is centered around small groups of people hanging out with Jesus and each other. These small groups usually hang out mid-week in homes where we can encourage each other and pray for peoples' needs in a relaxed, friendly fashion.
