Facing Persecution As A Christian

Have you ever directly (or indirectly) faced persecution because of your faith in Jesus Christ. Today, Christians are facing persecution of one form or another each and every day -- in the workplace, politics, social activities, and even in church. Christians in general are being looked down on as fanatics who want to impose their moral beliefs on everyone.

You can see it almost every day with one attack after another aimed at the so-called "Religious Right" by our national news media. In the workplace, you can see it in the comments people make about those unwilling to stoop to the levels of corruption and/or immorality they enjoy. In some cases, you may even see Christians persecuted when it comes to job advancement and other career building opportunities. In schools, Christians no longer have the "right" to pray. Prayers are also becoming taboo in many social arenas as well. Even in church, there is strife and persecution among fellow Christians.

What did Christ have to say about this? In Matthew (Chapter 5), Jesus said we are blessed when others insult us, persecute us, and say all kinds of evil things against us because of Him. Why are we considered to be blessed? To understand this, we must go to the real reason for the persecution. It is actually the Lord they are persecuting. They see God as a threat to their sinful ways. They don't want to compromise their lives, so instead they attack those that represent a threat to them. If we are serving the Lord as we ought to, then we will face opposition. But, as Paul reminds us in Ephesians (Chapter 6), our fight is not against men, but against Satan and his dominions.

When you face it again, look at it for what it really is -- then you will realize what a blessing it really is to be among that group being persecuted. For such persecution is a sure sign that you are serving the Lord; and as such, you will be rewarded in heaven for your service. But also remember to take pity on those who persecute you, for it is God's will that none should perish.
