What Is An Evangelical Friend?
The Friends Church began in the 17th century after George Fox received salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Mr. Fox preached repentance and God used him to spark a great revival in England. By 1660, there were thousands of people committed to God’s ministry through the Friends.
You may know the Friends as Quakers. A Justice of the Peace used the term “Quakers” after Fox told him (and all present) to “tremble before the Lord.” Later, they took the name, “The Society of Friends” because Jesus had said, “Ye are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:14).
The Friends became a symbol of integrity, known for:
Support for religious and political freedom (including women ministers)
Opposition to slavery
Honesty in business
Humane treatment of criminals & compassion for the mentally ill
Opposition to war, but aid to war victims and others in distress.
Spiritual renewal and
Education
Later, Friends came to the new world. In 1681, William Penn, a Friend, founded the colony of Pennsylvania, with the determination to allow freedom to practice Christianity according to the dictates of your beliefs and conscience. Pennsylvania was the only colony that did not need a standing militia, since they treated the Indians as equals, honoring their verbal agreements.
By 1812, Friends in Ohio had united to form Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends. They held their annual meetings in the Mt. Pleasant Yearly Meeting House for many years. Later Damascus became the headquarters and place of meeting. Since 1965 the church has held its annual session in Canton.
In 1971, the Ohio Yearly Meeting became the Evangelical Friends Church - Eastern Region (EFC-ER). The EFC-ER participates actively in a larger group of Friends worldwide, Evangelical Friends International-North America (EFI-NA).
As the part of the Body of Christ which gathers at 5 Summit Street to worship, our purpose is to glorify God.
We seek to bring Him glory by:
Exalting Christ first in all areas of our lives; both corporately and as individuals;
Making disciples who are: Knowledgeable in God’s Word, Able to apply God’s Word to their daily lives, and Actively concerned for the well-being of the saints;
Unleashing the saints to perform the ministry for which God has called and equipped them.
We would love to have you come and join us! Coming off the 220 Bypass, take the Greensboro/N220 Business exit and continue on N220 Business. You will merge into Memorial Blvd. Go approximately 4 1/2 miles and turn left onto Summit Street just below Virginia Museum of Natural History. Coming from 58, you will turn onto Starling Ave. and take a left at the stop light and an immediate right onto Summit Street right beside Charles Aaron, Attorney’s Office.
Come on in and let us be your FRIENDS!
